Approximately 50 cars have been smeared with what appears to be blood from a person in the German town of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.
Vehicles, walls and postboxes were marked, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they announced in a official communication.
Police say they were alerted during the night on Wednesday night, when a resident noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish liquid.
The substance had been applied in the form of a swastika, they stated.
Officers then discovered many other marked vehicles and residential walls in the surrounding area.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under regulations banning the public display of Nazi-era symbols.
Police say initial examinations show the fluid was likely human blood.
"At present there remains no lead as to where it came from; authorities are presently not cognizant of any physical harm in connection with the incident," they added.
City officials stated they were attempting "to solve the mystery" and have appealed to the residents for details.
A high-ranking official commented the vandalism left him without words and had to be resolved quickly.
"This incident affects the core of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the right-wing attack in 2020," he wrote on social media, mentioning the death of nine people by a gunman focusing on individuals of immigrant origin in February 2020.
