As any significant honors show draws close, there’s always a demand for introducing fresh award types to honor unsung work and fill the spirits of followers who have specialized interests.
My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, which is someone's personal cause. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and typically spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an essential concession for the industry of video games, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.
To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories effectively encompass many game types, and you can find room for most games within them.
Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to put them. Consider three of this year’s best games, each quite distinct: structural challenges from a specific release, intense tile-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers launched regularly that have no home at major award shows, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.
- An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated completely that year
- Another imaginative release received no nominations during that ceremony
- Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment recently
- Only a few brain-teasers managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories
Value of Brain-Teasers
These are often small games, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Well-known matching games stand as most popular titles globally and have been for many years.
The famous puzzle experience rivals famous sandbox experiences competing to become most purchased experience; it also contends for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, while interacting with diverse game types.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.
To emphasize again, these include experiences that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Logic title developers function at the demanding boundary interactive creation, developing some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Just like cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
