No fewer than thirteen people perish and 98 injured in train derailment in Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's major public works projects.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the head of state.

The president confirmed that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose term finished the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's economic goals for the southern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The building of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a significant increase of its duties in public works. They were built at an accelerated speed, defying expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had also fueled persistent apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an prior collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a primary political opposition demanded an prompt suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.

This halt was requested while awaiting a thorough technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."

In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and running of these vital projects.
